You’ve read a million packing lists and you’re all stocked up. Think you’re ready to go? Think again. Here are three things you might have overlooked when getting ready for the next big conference.

1. At least two pre-scheduled meetings with brands you want to work with.

Don’t wait until they come to you. If you know that a brand, marketing team or PR agency (especially those you want to have a better relationship with!) will be heading to the conference too, reach out. Contact via email, phone, carrier pigeon… you get the picture. If you’re polite and not wasting their time, you’ll get a great response.

2. Tools for Business Card Organization

No, not a business card holder (though, let’s be honest, you should have one of those too…), but a way to upload or catalog your business cards. You can either buy a binder and a bunch of baseball card pages (which is super low-tech) or, invest a little more in a card scanner to upload and store them all in Outlook. We recommend the affordable Penpower Scanner ($100 at Amazon.com) which, if you have friends nearby, would be an awesome shared item to split the cost.

3. An actual list of goals.

You’ve talked about what you want to accomplish. Maybe you’ve even set up some meetings with brands. But, put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard) and WRITE. IT. DOWN. You’ll be amazed at the difference if you take that little piece of paper with you, folded in your pocket. Sometimes, all it takes is a little reminder to keep you focused, on track and get the best out of your opportunities.
